“I have run 131 marathons in 125 countries over the world”

In conversation with Dieter Elster from Germany

Dieter Elster was one of the first to register for the 2023 edition of Congo River Marathon on June 4. We talked to him about his motivation to come run in the DR Congo and his motivation and challenges to run marathons around the world.

What motivates you running marathons?

Running is for me a combination of staying healthy and learning about new countries and meeting new people.

When are where did you run your 1st marathon?

I ran my first marathon in 2001 in Cologne, Germany.

How many marathons have you run so far and where in the world?

I have been running so far 131 marathons in 125 countries throughout the world.

What was your biggest challenge so far running a marathon?

My biggest challenge is not the marathon itself, but to keep the motivation for training during the preparation.

What is your motivation to run the XXL Energy Congo River Marathon this year?

Since many years I wanted to visit DRC. It has always been a country on my wish list of countries I wanted to go to. It never happened yet unfortunately. So I am happy, that the Congo River Marathon offers the opportunity to visit DRC and come for a visit and - and not to forget - to run a marathon.

Any tips for someone running their first marathon?

When running a marathon, the most important thing is, that you believe in yourself. That you can make it. But never forget, that it will be a long journey. In preparation and during the race. So prepare well and then just enjoy it!

What is your best marathon memory and in which country?

Each and every marathon has a specific memory. Either the people, the scenery, or the whole trip at all.
